IMPLEMENTASI METODE ABJADI DI CIVILIZE PITTHAYA SCHOOL, CHIANG RAI, THAILAND UTARA
Abstract
This article discusses the implementation of the Abjadi Method in Qur’anic reading instruction at Civilize Pitthaya School in Chiang Rai, Northern Thailand, where the majority of students are converts (mualaf) from diverse linguistic backgrounds. Specifically designed for beginners, the method introduces Arabic letters gradually without vowel markings and utilizes interactive media such as songs to enhance memory and student engagement. This study adopts a qualitative-descriptive approach to gain an in-depth understanding of the learning dynamics, teacher and student responses, as well as challenges in implementing the method. Data were collected through participatory observation, semi-structured interviews, and document studies conducted during a community service program held from December 10 to 24, 2024. The findings indicate that the Abjadi Method is effective in improving students’ ability to recognize and pronounce Arabic letters accurately and enjoyably. Despite challenges such as phonetic adaptation and differences in letter sequencing, the response from both teachers and students was highly positive. With proper teacher training and the development of a systematic module, the Abjadi Method has the potential to serve as an innovative solution for Qur’anic instruction, particularly in Muslim communities with non-Arab backgrounds.
