Abstract

This article examines PayLater practices through Abdullah Mustaqim's maqasid-based exegetical approach, focusing on their compatibility with the objectives of maqasid al-shari'ah in contemporary digital financial transactions. The study is motivated by the rapid growth of PayLater services and the ongoing debate regarding their conformity with Islamic ethical and legal principles. Employing a qualitative approach with content analysis as its primary method, the article utilizes the Quran and Abdullah Mustaqim's works on maqasid-based exegesis as primary sources. Secondary data are derived from the literature on maqasid al-shari'ah, fatwas issued by the National Sharia Council of the Indonesian Ulema Council, relevant regulations, and scholarly studies on PayLater services and Islamic economics. Data were collected through documentation and analyzed using the maqasid-based exegetical framework. The findings indicate that PayLater practices are permissible when they ensure contractual transparency, avoid riba, gharar, and maysir, and provide tangible benefits to users. Conversely, practices involving interest charges, exploitative penalties, and excessive consumerism contradict the objectives of maqasid al-shari'ah, particularly the protection of wealth (hifz al-mal). These findings demonstrate the relevance of maqasid-based exegesis in addressing contemporary financial issues and promoting Sharia-compliant digital financial practices.
