Abstract

The discourse on hermeneutics in Quranic studies remains a significant issue in contemporary Islamic thought. While some Muslim scholars consider hermeneutics a useful approach for contextualizing Quranic teachings, others reject its application due to its perceived incompatibility with the epistemological foundations of classical Islamic exegesis. This article aims to analyze Fahmi Salim’s critique of hermeneutics in the interpretation of Quranic legal verses. Employing a qualitative approach with content analysis as the research method, the study utilizes Fahmi Salim’s writings as primary sources and relevant books, journal articles, and scholarly literature on hermeneutics, Quranic interpretation, and contemporary Islamic thought as secondary sources. The analysis focuses on identifying Fahmi Salim’s arguments regarding the methodological validity of hermeneutics in interpreting legal verses of the Quran. The findings reveal that Fahmi Salim rejects the application of hermeneutics to Quranic legal interpretation because it may relativize the authority of divine revelation and depart from the established principles of classical Islamic exegesis. This study contributes to the broader discourse on Quranic interpretive methodologies and provides insights into the ongoing debate between traditional Islamic exegesis and contemporary hermeneutical approaches in Islamic scholarship.
