Abstract

The news of the return of the leader of the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) community organization Habib Rizieq Shihab (HRS) from Saudi Arabia has caught the attention of the Indonesian public. His return became news that did not escape the coverage of the mainstream media and online media. Sindonews.com is no exception. Departing from this, researchers are interested in knowing what the commodification of the news content of Habib Rizieq Shihab's return is like on the online media Sindonews.com and what the power relations are like in reporting on Habib Rizieq Shihab's return from Saudi Arabia. This research uses a qualitative approach with critical paradigms and instrumental case studies. The theory used is Commodification of Content from Vincent Mosco's Political Economy theory with the Discourse Analysis approach from Teun A.van Dijk. The results of the study found that Sindonews.com commodified news content with commodities such as popularity, personality, and Habib Rizieq's legal case. So that Sindonews.com managed to get a profit in the form of an increase in the numberPageviews. As for the findings of Discourse Analysis in the news, Sindonews.com tries to convey news with many angels from supporters of Habib Rizieq and incumbents. Also found journalists subjectivity in writing news. Power relations found on Sindonews.com.Newsroom has the power to determine the theme of the news and decide which news will be published
